The Department of Dermatology employs four specialists who, through participating in medical conferences at home and abroad, follow the global trends in treatment of skin diseases. Our dermatologists also transmit their experiences with medical application of naftalan to the colleagues abroad.
SKIN DISEASES WE TREAT AT THE DEPARTMENT OF DERMATOLOGY:
- psoriasis
- atopic dermatitis
- contact dermatitis
- scleroderma
- post-burn scars
Our speciality in the treatment of skin diseases, particularly psoriasis, is the application of naftalan – a unique natural health factor, which is very rare, and is, apart from Croatia, used for medicinal purposes only in Azerbaijan. In addition to naftalan, an important role in treatment has thermal saltwater, which, thanks to its compounds – fluorine, chlorine, and sodium – has properties of seawater, and is considered a remnant of the ancient Pannonian Sea. The patients who suffer from psoriasis and other aforementioned skin diseases enjoy the beneficial effects of naftalan baths on their skin.
We apply various therapies for treatment of skin diseases, and the most common are:
- naftalan therapy
- thermal water baths
- Darsonvalization
- phototherapy
- magnet therapy
Naftalan therapy is used for skin diseases (psoriasis, neurodermatitis), and for diseases of musculoskeletal system (inflammatory rheumatic diseases: rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, degenerative diseases of hips and spine, non-articular rheumatism).
The types of naftalan application are:
- naftalan baths in a tub
- smearing naftalan over entire body
During a naftalan bath, a patient is immersed in oil up to shoulders at a temperature of 34 - 38 degrees Celsius for 12 – 14 minutes.
A patient smeared with naftalan is exposed to the light from Solux lamp for 15 - 20 minutes.
THERAPIES AT NAFTALAN
Naftalan treatments - daily baths in naftalan tubs. A patient spends 12 minutes in a naftalan tub every day of the week (except Sunday). After every treatment, naftalan is sterilized and used to fill a tub for another patient. The bathing technology is up-to-date, and sanitary conditions are on a high level.
Smearing with naftalan - used with every psoriasis patient in the evenings, or used instead of baths if there is a contraindication for bathing.
Thermal water treatment - everyday exercises in a pool with thermal saltwater under the guidance of a physiotherapist. The exercises last for 30 minutes. The water is mineral, hyperthermic, and full of iodine and sodium chlorate.
Mastic therapy - a solid preparation consisting of 30% of naftalan, paraffin and wax is applied with the help of compressions, or by immersing body parts in dissolved preparation, which solidifies when cooling, and is used with exercises for small joints of hands.
Phototherapy – used with patients suffering from skin diseases, and used alongside naftalan therapy, as it provides for a better outcome. In the phototherapy cabin, the entire body is exposed to UVA and UVB light. Partial phototherapy is used with patients with skin changes on palms and soles.
